Her career started with Spanish pop songs, but lately she scored big success in the American and European market too. Shakira was born in Colombia in 1977. She started singing and writing songs at the age of 8, and after being rejected from the local choir, she turned towards the music industry. Due to a series of coincidences, Shakira was discovered by Sony Colombia in 1990, but her after two unsuccessful records made at the age of 14 and 16 (1991 and 1993) she decided to finish high school.
After graduation, Shakira released her first album “Pies Descalzos,” in 1995. In 2000, Shakira started to work on her English debut with the help of Gloria Estefan. Her first English record was made up of translations of her previous work and newly composed songs. Critics noted that her skills in English are not good enough to write lyrics, but her album, “Laundry Service” became another success upon its release in 2001.
In recent years Shakira released five more albums and dozens of singles, some of them being Spanish and English versions of the same record, with the lyrics translated. In a matter of months after the release of her first English album, her popularity and acceptance in American and Europe exceeded that in South-America.
